Lennox and Addington's great communities.

Lennox & Addington is home to many great communities. Bustling downtowns brimming with successful shops, restaurants and boutiques are found throughout L&A, each offering unique business opportunities for ambitious entrepreneurs.

L&A's largest community is Greater Napanee. A town of just over 15,000 people, Greater Napanee offers a healthy mix of national commercial operations and locally-grown businesses. The great selection of goods and services offered makes it unnecessary for people to travel to other centres to get what they need.  It's also beginning to attract shoppers from other areas.

The town has the luxury of being located right on Highway 401, with many large retailers like Walmart andCanadian Tire operating in this new commercial area. Seeing the growth of the area, Home Hardware opened the doors on their new large-format store in June 2010.  Also seeing the potential that Greater Napanee offers,The Hampton Inn's 58-room facility offers an accommodation option previously unavailable to visitors. Another big draw is the Strathcona Paper Centre, a recreation facility that brings people ready to spend their money into town 12 months a year.

Only 2 minutes south of the new commercial area is historic Downtown Napanee. This thriving retail and commercial district is becoming a true destination, home to entrepreneurs ably filling niche markets with high quality product and excellent customer service. Unique and trendy jewelryhigh-end footwear and clothing, tasteful dining experiences, specialty coffee and ice cream shops are just a few of the stores prospering. The combination of the new commercial district and the re-invigorated downtown offer consumers a little bit of everything and should be on the radar for any entrepreneur looking to start a business.

Twenty minutes to the south of Napanee is the uniquely historic village of Bath in Loyalist Township. With a population of about 1,700 people, Bath is a beautiful community found along Highway 33 on the shore of Lake Ontario overlooking Amherst Island.  Founded in 1784, Bath is home to dozens of historically significant homes, several of which have been turned into museums or art galleries. The downtown area is very quaint with well-kept storefronts dotting the main street.  The population continues to grow at a very fast pace as new subdivisions being built within close proximity to the downtown. A championship golf course, Loyalist Golf & Country Club and the high-end homes being built to the immediate north of the village are bringing higher than average incomes to the area. Active volunteer groups are adding to the success of the village, their efforts highlighted by a weekly farmers market that bringing local producers and the public together. All these factors are resulting in prosperous businesses in this charming little village.

The Township of Stone Mills also has a handful of downtowns home to successful entrepreneurs. Tamworth, the largest community in the township, is located about 30 minutes north of Napanee. Ts little hamlet of 750 people boasts a downtown that has also seen an increase in activity in recent years. For a small community, they sure have a lot to offer. A hockey arena, a bank, a real estate office, 5 restaurants, a grocery store, a butcher shop, a hardware store, a gift shop, a bakery and a medical centre - Tamworth is the bustling hub of the rural area. The local feed mill, O'Neill's Farm Supply, services the farming community for miles around. This community also has a highly active volunteer base gushing with community pride and quietly adds to the success of the area. One of a large handful of service groups and volunteer organizations bring a variety of community events on a near-weekly bases that are always well-attended. The economic spin-off generated from these events undoubtedly helps the businesses in the area succeed.

A little further north you will find several communities in the Township of Addington Highlands that benefit from the variety of wilderness tourism opportunities in the region. Bon Echo Provincial Park brings the majority of visitors into the area, with more than 200,000 people flocking to the park on an annual basis. The summer sees many cottagers come to the many lakes and private campgrounds, depending on the mix of stores and restaurants found in Denbigh, Cloyne, Northbrook, Flinton and Kaladar. The winter brings snowmobilers from all over to experience the many trails found in the area, giving local businesses a boost.  For entrepreneurs with a love of nature, Addington Highlands is a must-see, and possibly the ideal place for you to start your business.
