Moving Your Business to a New Location

moving

Moving...The word itself sends me into a state of panic, conjuring up images of boxes, moving vans, bribing friends, and heavy lifting. Why would anyone subject themselves to such pains? The answer to this question, of course, is pretty obvious: your present circumstance is such that moving to a new location just makes sense.

Whether you’ve realized that your one bedroom apartment with the drug dealer next door is no place to raise a young family or you’ve realized that high levels of competition in your current location are eating away at your profit margins, moving becomes the next logical step (...although, I probably would still live next to the drug dealer rather than pack boxes).

As this blog is for entrepreneurs, I’m going to stick to the topic of moving your business. Once the decision to move becomes obvious, like the example mentioned, the next important question is “where to?” This question is answered extremely well in an article written by Scott Allen on “Choosing a Location for Your Business." Here he discusses the many different factors that are crucial to determining where to locate you business, from considering where you work best to “are there any strategic partners close by?”

Remember, the mantra “location, location, location” did not appear out of thin air, so I would pay close heed to Scott’s recommendations as the worst possible situation that any entrepreneur could encounter is moving from one unprofitable environment to another unprofitable environment.
